About Dr. Scott Clack ND
Dr. Clack graduated from Bastyr University, located in Seattle, Washington, in June 1997. He practiced in B.C. for 2 years before moving home to Ontario. He opened Touchstone Naturopathic Centre in Toronto in April 2000, which operated through December 2018. Dr. Clack currently practices at the Oakville Naturopathic Wellness Centre.

Being a Naturopathic Doctor is a second career for me. As an adult in my 20’s I believed in living a healthy lifestyle: I exercised a lot, ate well (so I thought), and got good sleep. I did suffer from sinus infections running 1-2 weeks, avoiding doctors and antibiotics and trying to curb symptoms with over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. When my wife was recommended by a Naturopathic Doctor to follow an elimination diet to treat her migraine headaches, I followed along with the diet to support her. Double success: her migraines decreased dramatically, and my chronic sinus congestion began to clear up, making my workouts much easier.

No medical doctor that my wife consulted had hinted at food intolerances being triggers of migraines with the exception of avoiding tyramine-rich foods (eg. wine, chocolate). The elimination diet, and the possibility of hidden, undiagnosed food sensitivities proved to be a very successful treatment. As I continued following the diet, I also used herbal medicine and immune-stimulating vitamins to cure the occasional sinus infection I suffered during the winter, and had much better results than the OTC’s.

From that point, I not only decided to integrate naturopathic approaches into my lifestyle, I decided to train to become a Naturopathic Doctor. I graduated from Bastyr University in June 1997.

Fast forward to today. Canadians suffer more from chronic illness than was the case 25 years ago. Rates of cancer, autoimmune disorders (eg. MS, Crohn’s Disease), allergies, and developmental disorders (eg. ADHD, Autism) have dramatically increased in that time. Modern medicine tries to help Canadians by using new medicines that block or control the mechanisms that are understood to trigger these conditions. Holistic medicine, practiced by Naturopathic Doctors as well as by some MD’s, looks for triggers from a person’s lifestyle and environmental exposures as the triggers of disease. Then patients are prescribed natural medicines or treatments that activate the body’s innate healing mechanisms to restore health, in addition to eliminating or avoiding the triggers.

It’s important for me to raise your awareness about how Naturopathic Medicine is practiced, at least by myself (and I think by most ND’s): You will not receive a prescription or plan that will treat your complaints immediately, and you’re done. Naturopathic approaches for chronic illnesses involve a multi-step, multi-factorial process that typically takes a minimum of 6 to 12 months to achieve complete relief of your health problems, and sometimes longer. If you’re expecting to be given one pill to fix you’re ailments, you need to adjust your expectations. You will be directed to change your lifestyle: that will include changing your diet and eating habits, to introduce regular exercise (if you’re not doing this already), improve your sleep habits and adopt spiritual or mindfulness practices into your regular routine. Natural medicines and treatments will be recommended and modified over time to help you safely become healthier.

With 23 years of clinical experience under my belt, I am confident that my approaches in Naturopathic Medicine will help you to feel better in a short period of time. It is understood that you want to feel better, especially when you’re paying for this healthcare. Most patients see improvements in the first month but that is only the start of the process. Relief of symptoms does not necessarily translate into longterm relief. Please continue your treatments, as directed, until there is confirmation that treatment is complete.
