ADHD Treatment

ADHD Treatment – Dr. Scott Clack's Naturopathic Approach

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is now diagnosed in young children, tweens/teens and adults. It can be a relatively mild affliction, or can significantly impact the child/adult's life in both school/work and social settings. The major components of ADHD are:

  • Inattention
  • Hyperactivity
  • Impulsivity

A person with ADHD isn't always have hyperactive. In fact currently there are three types: the inattentive (and not hyper) type; the hyper type; and lastly there is the mixed hyper and inattentive type. In practice the most common type that we see is the mixed type. Assessment should be complete by a trained, qualified practitioner who follows CADDRA (Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance) guidelines. Assessment is important because there are many conditions that mimic ADHD including Autism, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Learning disorder, Language disorder, Anxiety or Depression, Seizure disorders, Thyroid Dysfunction, Lead poisoning, Concussions and Sleep disorders. Effective treatments are dependent on having the right assessment: be sure you're right, and the best treatment results will follow.

How we treat ADHD

Using individualized diet counseling and nutritional supplements, herbal medicines and/or homeopathic remedies, and acupuncture we develop a personalized program for you or your family member. These treatments are safe and effective, and can be coordinated to be safely used along prescription medicines.

All individualized programs address (as needed)

  • cognitive functions such as attention and memory
  • food reactions: food sensitivities or allergies, as well as intolerances to food additives or natural compounds (eg. salicylates, oxalates)
  • effects of undiagnosed infections, such as Candidiasis, parasites, or bacteria such as Streptococcus and Lyme disease (Borrelia)
  • energy balancing and managing cycles that can go from "over-energetic" to crashing
  • mood, aggression and negative thought patterns
  • sleep issues - from insomnia (initiating sleep, or maintaining) to excessive dreaming
  • heavy metal toxicity and environmental chemical/toxin exposures
  • genetic and epigenetic errors in metabolism

Conventional medicine focuses mostly on neurotransmitter imbalances (dopamine, serotonin) that can result in difficult attention and hyperactivity. Naturopathic Medicine seeks to find the combination of factors that contribute to each person's version of ADHD through an extensive review of their health history, family history, physical examination, and testing. Research is showing that many children on medication are not achieving the expected academic improvements (click here). Plus, there are many side effects with the medications that often worsen common problems people with ADHD have, such as sleep issues.

Our 12 month program uses up-to-date research based natural treatments that allows people to live a healthy and successful life without medications.
